The Canadian Commission for UNESCO was proud to work with Parks Canada and other partners in organizing the Youth component of the 32nd Session of the World Heritage Committee. The World Heritage Committee held its annual meeting in Québec City from July 2 – 10, 2008, coinciding with the city’s 400th anniversary celebration.
The World Heritage Youth Forum brought together 30 young people between the ages of 18 to 25--15 Canadians and 15 others invited by Canada from countries representing the five geographical regions of UNESCO--who spent more than two weeks learning about world heritage and the Convention, undertaking educational visits to Canadian World Heritage sites and attending sessions of the World Heritage Committee. An outcome of the event is the “Six Billion People, One Common Heritage” dossier, launched through a partnership with the National Film Board of Canada. It contains many photos and texts posted by the youth participants as well as the video they produced and presented at the opening ceremony of the 32nd Session of the World Heritage Committee. Today, the Web site aims at being a platform for exchanges and discussions about World Heritage between youth from all over the globe, and all are invited to contribute.

في إطار التحضيرات لمؤتمر مؤسسة الفكر العربي "فكر 7"
ملتقى الشباب العربي يعقد مؤتمره التحضيري في العاصمة اللبنانية
بيروت، 12 تموز/ يوليو 2008: شهدت العاصمة اللبنانية بيروت، انعقاد المؤتمر التحضيري لملتقى الشباب العربي، في إطار الإعدادات لمؤتمر مؤسسة الفكر العربي السنوي السابع "فكر 7" والذي يعقد في القاهرة بين 25 و28 نوفمبر القادم. وقد شارك في هذا المؤتمر مجموعة من الشباب العربي من مختلف الدول العربية، حيث تم طرح أهم المشاكل والتحديات التي تواجه المجتمع العربي ودور الجيل الشاب في أخذ زمام المبادرة لوضع الاستراتيجيات والحلول المناسبة والكفيلة بإحداث التغيير في واقعهم المعاصر.
جاء ذلك في تصريح لصاحب السمو الملكي، الأمير بندر بن خالد الفيصل، المشرف العام لمؤتمر فكر قال فيه: "أن الإهتمام بالشباب هو من أولويات مؤسسة الفكر العربي وهي تأتي بتوجيه من رئيس المؤسسة صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير خالد الفيصل الذي يولي مشاركة الشباب أهميّة خاصّة، كما أن هذا اللقاء ليس الأول فقد قام مؤتمر فكر بإشراك الشباب في جميع مؤتمراته السابقة".
كما قال سموه: "يرى القائمون على مؤسسة الفكر العربي أن الشباب هم الأداة الرئيسة في عملية التغيير والتنمية المجتمعية التي ننشدها جميعاً، حيث أنهم الأقدر على تحمل أعباء النهوض بالمجتمعات العربية لما يتمتّعون به من شغف للتغيير والتطور. ومن هنا كان تبني المؤتمر للعديد من المبادرات الشبابية ليكون جسراً لنقل صوت الشباب وهمومه إلى القادة وأصحاب القرار ورجال الفكر في العالم العربي. كما أنّ عدم الاهتمام بقضايا الشباب وثقافته العربية، يجعلهم أسرى عجلة الثقافة الغربية المعاصرة، التي تتسبّب في ضياع هويتهم العربية وخصوصيّة مجتمعهم وثقافتهم."
وأضاف سموه قائلاً: "بعد اجتماعنا بالعديد من الشباب والشابات، من جميع الدول العربية، ازدادت حماستنا لما وجدناه عندهم من اندفاع شديد للدفاع عن هويتهم وثقافتهم العربية الأصيلة في وجه التحديات التي يفرضها عصر العولمة على كافة الأصعدة. كما لمسنا لديهم وعياً نستطيع البناء عليه لإعداد قادة للمستقبل، يكونوا قادرين بالفعل على إحداث التغيير وقيادة المجتمع العربي نحو ثقافة تنموية واعدة، عنوانها التجديد والإبداع مع الحفاظ على الأصالة والموروث التاريخي للأمة".
وفي كلمته التي ألقاها في المؤتمر حول موضوع مؤتمر "فكر 7" "ثقافة التنمية"، قال السيد حمد العماري، المدير التنفيذي لمؤتمر فكر: "يأتي هذا المؤتمر في سياق التحضيرات تمهيداً لعقد المؤتمر السنوي لمؤسسة الفكر العربي "فكر7"، إذ يطرح المؤتمر العديد من المواضيع الحيوية بالنسبة للتنمية الشاملة في الواقع العربي، ودور الثقافة في إحداث التغيير والتطوير المنشود. وهنا لا بد لي أن أؤكد أن الثقافة ليست مرتبطة بالحالة الاقتصادية فقط، بل أيضاً تتأثرّ بالحالة الاجتماعية العامة داخل المجتمعات، والتي نهدف إلى تناولها في مؤتمرنا والعمل على تطويرها والبناء على إيجابياتها".
كما أضاف العماري: "إن أهمية الثقافة تنبع من ضرورة الوعي للنهوض والتغيير وتبني وسائل تنموية أكثر كفاءة من الوسائل التقليدية التي درجت المجتمعات العربية على اتباعها، كالتعليم والنمو الاقتصادي ودور الإعلام، بالطبع تلك الأدوات مهمة جداً إلا أن توظيفها في مكانها المناسب والاستفادة منها بالشكل الأمثل تتطلب درجة عالية من الوعي والثقافة والإطلاع، وهذا ما نعمل على تحقيقه بمشاركة نخبة من رجال الفكر وصناع القرار في العالم العربي، وبالتعاون مع فئة الشباب الذين يتحملون المسؤولية الأكبر في تجسيد الأفكار ونشر مفهوم "ثقافة التنمية".
هذا وتشارك مؤسسة الفكر العربي بمشروع "شباب من أجل التغيير" بالتعاون مع منظمة TakingITGlobal ومكتبة الاسكندرية، وهو عبارة عن منتدى مفتوح للتحاور وطرح الأفكار. ويهدف هذا المشروع إلى مناقشة الطرق الكفيلة بتعزيز مساهمات الشباب ودعمهم ليكونوا أكثر فعالية ونشاطاً في تحقيق رؤية مؤتمر "فكر 7" بإحداث التغيير في مجتمعاتهم والنهوض بها. كما يسلّط المشروع الضوء على التحديات التي تواجه الشباب العربي في مجتمعاتهم، في محاولة لابتكار أفكار جديدة وحلول لمواجهة هذه التحديات، ليكونوا جزءا من التغيير الذي يأملون في التوصّل إليه.

I just spent the morning at the Boys and Girls Club National Conference and wanted to share some highlights. Overall, it was really wonderful to meet many of the boys and girls staff from across Canada and get a better understanding of their priorities and program areas. Emily and I presented on Change That Clicks and generated a lot of interest in the program which is great! The best part of the worshop by far was the Internet Safety activity. We wanted BGCC staff to have a taste for how we are able to address some heavy topics with CTC but in a fun and dynamic manner :) The participants broke out into groups of 3 or 4 and wrote a short song about The Good and Bad one experiences in the digital world. I was super impressed with people's creativity, check it out:
There were some great ideas thrown around that could help us broaden our reach with CTC such as holding a Train The Trainer program for all interested clubs so they can lead the program singlehandedly. Our impact could be so powerful if we build the capacity of BGCC staff to provide educational programming using ICTs. Especially with the technological enhancements that will come through the CanTech Program, i feel our contribution needs to be more substantial than a one off program - we can influence the healthy institutionalization of ICTs. Beyond that, it is clear that our action-oriented approach and focus on community development are encouraged by BGCC staff who ultimately want to see their members driven to be contributors in society. I hope that we will see a greater exchange between our organizations in terms of how we enhance the leadership capacity of children and youth. I am also really interested in learning more about the training process for new BGCC staff in terms of effective ways to communication, interact and build healthy relationships with their members, how to resolve conflicts that arise and how to discipline in a non-threatening and non-oppressive manner. I have been thinking about the importance of equipping the CLC coordinators with anti-oppression and cross-cultural resolution training to build their ability to deal with difficult situations as they arise. What a perfect opportunity to exchange expertise with BGCC!
I had another inspiring experience listening to a speech by a young man who first joined the Boys and Girls Club as a member 11 years back. Currently working for the national office as the leadership program coordinator, he wanted to express his immense gratitude for the unwavering dedication of BGCC staff to raising the quality of life for the youth in their communities. His story was really touching…he felt that his life was completely turned around because of the opportunities and support of BGCC from day one. As he said, to empower youth there are two very important things: opportunity and believing. He felt that the BGCC staff always believed in him, and helped him realize his maximum potential. Today, he is coordinating a leadership program he took part in years ago and feels so honoured and privileged to shape the program that had the greatest impact on him. His speech was so genuine and it truly warmed my heart to know affecting change is as simple in believing and never losing hope in one another.
We would like to remind you with the “Youth for Change” project Mini-Grants, as the deadline for applying is May 25th.
If you are from one of these 10 countries: Egypt, Jordan, Morocco, Tunisia, Qatar, Yemen, UAE, Iraq, Lebanon and Palestine, and have a youth-led project that you need to fund, and haven’t applied yet, do that NOW! The other day when I wrote an article about being displaced in church I got none of your reactions but today, there are so many displaced people all over… and the latest being in South Africa.
And I was wondering to myself as I listened to those people talking about how they cannot get jobs because of the other black Africa. Is it the lack of opportunity or knowledge? Is it the lack of capability or knowhow? Is it the lack of learning or a good education? Are we to blame for all the injustices in these world? Is it the mistake of those who saw opportunity while the natives did not?
You know, it is not my mistake that I was born in a family that is capable of raising me well, giving me a good education, letting me get even better degrees outside my native land and able to fly all over the world and finally even decide want to work in say South Africa is it? It is not my mistake that I am brilliant enough to secure a scholarship and finally a great job is say South Africa? It is not my problem if my brother sleeps hungry and I have enough food and money to go drinking maybe two or three beers drive my BMX and cruise on the best roads that do not have traffic so I don’t get headaches on my way to my posh and lavish home ? I s it my problem that I got a job that is well paying and you did not? I s it a mistake that I can think more that you can and be innovative with the little knowledge I have and make myself a billionaire? It is not my mistake when I need something and all I can do is pick up the phone or drop a mail and to the right person who can help I and you can’t? Is it all about is it my mistake that…….?
I have tried to understand where the black South Africans are coming from and truly I have tried and maybe I can try to just a little bit understand where are really coming from!
How would you feel when you can put a decent meal on the table for your family when all you do is struggle the whole day and perhaps all you get is a dollar in return? How would you feel if when you get up each morning the people you are going to beg employment from are not even your fellow countrymen? How would you feel if these not fellow countrymen are the ones who determine the type of salary or wage you get? How would you feel if at all they earn way above what you do, which of course is the case? And worse still what if you have no education to challenge then? What would you do? With these and maybe many more questions that they may pause I totally understand and feel what they are going through! As a person and a young person for that matter, I know how it feels like to try and make ends meets! I can try to fit my feet into those big shoes but in whichever directions I may never actually feel what exactly they are feeling! But all in all I can try to relate with them!
Now comes the hard part is it justified what they are doing to their fellow Africans? That is a question I would like you to think about.
